Ashley is a Licensed Midwife, living in Texas, who loves all things caffeine, people and words. When she’s not catching babies you can find her whipping tallow, writing, or telling the latest Netflix-documentary-worthy life story.
Or in therapy. Just depends on the day.
When I was seventeen and knee deep in learning all I could about Midwifery and Holistic Medicine, I stumbled across the world of natural remedies and began a rabbit trail of researching the benefits of various herbs.
One such herb, called Comfrey, drew me in because of it’s long history of use in herbal medicine. The story goes that in medieval times, the Greeks and Romans used Comfrey to heal broken bones, sprains and wounds. They termed it “knitbone” as it was believed that it could literally “knit bones back together”.
I was fascinated. As I continued to dig, I gathered a list of other herbs that I found had unique skin healing benefits and dreamed up an idea to make my very own salve.
In those early days, I assumed it would be used on the many babies around me as a diaper ointment and would often give it away at baby showers. Soon, however, people began using it for other skin-related needs and the reports came flooding in. Batch after batch would get snapped up quicker than I could make it and those small jars of green goodness garnered a reputation all on their own. For the next thirteen years I would continue to randomly make small batches as the people around me asked for more - never really dreaming beyond that.
Until, Beef Tallow.
Walking into a boujie boutique one weekend, I tried a sample of tallow based skincare and fell in love. For more than a year, anytime I got the chance - I would roam all throughout their store fascinated and then buy another jar before leaving.
So in 2023, armed with my project-loving ADHD and the toxic trait of thinking “I could probably make that”…I bought some beef tallow and started whipping up my own blends.
First for myself, then for a friend who wanted to use it for her growing baby bump during pregnancy.
Picking and choosing which herbs or essential oils we could include into a recipe to bring out the most benefits was my favorite part of the project.
And as 2024 came to a close, I began slowing down in my Midwifery career and realized the time had finally come to lean in a little more and give these products the launch they deserved.
The journey has been clunky at times with endless learning curves, frustrated kitchen-moments and tears. But the joy I get in seeing families love these little creations has been worth it all. I will not promise perfection, but what I can promise is that every recipe will be intentionally designed, rooted in tradition, and crafted with care.
So, inspired by the herb that started it all, I welcome you to…
Comfrey & Wild.
